Association For Research On Mothering

The Association for Research on Mothering (ARM) is the first feminist international organization devoted specifically to the topic of mothering-motherhood. ARM was officially launched in September 1998. Members include: scholars, writers, activists, social workers, midwives, nurses, therapists, lawyers, teachers, politicians, parents, students and artists, from more than 20 countries, as well as numerous local and international agencies, governmental and social, and community groups that work for, and on behalf of mothers.

Arm's mandate is to provide a forum for the discussion and dissemination of research on motherhood and to establish a community of individuals and institutions working and researching in the area of mothering and motherhood. ARM, first and foremost, seeks to promote maternal scholarship, both at the university and community level, by bringing together interested individuals to share their insights, experiences, ideas, stories, studies and concerns about mothering and motherhood.

ARM is concerned in both membership and research, to the inclusion of all mothers including First Nations mothers, immigrant and refugee mothers, working-class mothers, lesbian mothers, mothers with disabilities, mothers of colour, and mothers of other marginalized groups.

ARM is committed to bridging the gap between community work and academic research on mothering. We aim to provide a forum wherein knowledge can be shared and dialogue fostered between the community and academics so that we can best learn how to implement supports addressing the diverse experiences, insights and concerns of mothers. ARM remains committed to the development and a promotion of community of individuals and institutions that research and work in the area of mothering and motherhood. ARM is creating a network of maternal researchers, which will span the globe, bridge academe and activism, and link "lived mothering" to "examined motherhood".
