10,000 MOTHERS x $25 = A FIRST EVER HOME FOR THE MOTHERHOOD MOVEMENT
Motherhood Foundation Inc. Capital Campaign for the Museum Of Motherhood
Dear Friend,
I am writing you about a project I’ve been working on for a long time.
As part of my ongoing work with Mamapalooza to create platforms that honor and celebrate mothers and mother-work, I am truly at a crossroads and poised to participate in something that I consider truly great. I would love to tell you more about it.
The Motherhood Foundation Inc., is a certified nonprofit 501c3 that creates, produces and presents artistic, educational and cultural content that studies and supports mothers and their activities. Our next project is the creation of the Museum Of Motherhood (M.O.M.), that will leave a true legacy of empowerment and support, honoring mothers past, present and future.
On the next page you will find out more about this project, but first let me tell you why I am so passionate about this.
The last twelve years have been pivotal, as my focus has been increasingly on honoring and celebrating the many amazing women in my life, and indeed in the world.
Of course, the women who influenced me the most were the ones who raised and loved me as a child, often without remuneration and frequently without the recognition of achievements their husbands or peers enjoyed in the workplace and outside the home.
Frankly, mother-work continues to be one of the least celebrated accomplishments and yet has the most profound impact on subsequent generations. I am not talking about glorified celebrity baby bumps, but the day to day feeding, raising, caring for and educating of children, as well as the nurturing and ‘mothering’ which goes without saying is of the upmost importance, and honestly is often perpetrated by men as well as women.
It’s my personal belief, that as we lift people up and hear their stories, we heal and empower them as people and honor them as contributing members of society. Even today, mothers struggle with a host of issues particular to their life and work choices.
Ongoing issues of depression, over-work, mother-blame, lack of financial remuneration and often chronic pregnancy-related health issues make up a large part of the mother population. Workplace pay issues, healthcare obstacles and feminist and equality issues aside, because, while we have made great strides in the workplace and beyond, issues of domestic violence and a host of other maladies that reflect mother-specific life/work, are still very much present in our society.
Won’t you work with me to honor the generations of women who have gone before, and those yet to come, by participating in our capital campaign? M.O.M will examine the roles of mothers throughout history in America & beyond?
I am absolutely devoted to this project. Specifically in honor of Florence Greist, Martha Timmons, Bertha Rose, Joy Rose Sr. and Alice B. Marpet. These are the women who made me who I am, and who have shaped my life in no small way.
I’m sure there are special people on your list. Please help us celebrate their legacy by becoming a member of our museum or participating in our Capital Campaign today. Thank You So Much,
Since 2003 a devoted team of volunteers have been working to realize the dream of a Museum Of Motherhood, dedicated to the historic preservation and ongoing study of motherhood and mother-work, located in Seneca Falls, New York.
Initial proposals listed 2011 as the goal for achieving a physical structure to house Motherhood Foundation Inc., and our offices as well as the museum itself, for the purposes of creating ongoing Museum Of Motherhood collections, a library and exhibitions while broadly disseminating information as it has to with our vision for the Museum. In addition to being able to host fundraising events, traveling scholars, students, seminars and ongoing media regarding (M)others.
We have found such a structure and currently in the process of negotiating ownership of this building at 60 Cayuga Street in the historic district of Seneca Falls, New York, home to the National Women’s Hall Of Fame, Convention Days, The Birth of The American Suffragette Movement and more.
We cannot achieve this dream without your help.
We are launching a Capital Campaign with the goal of raising a total of $1,000,000.00, with first phases of building purchase only requiring us to raise one quarter of that initially, equaling $250,000.00. The purchase price of the 60 Cayuga property is $169,000.00. With some immediate repairs needed, insurance, closing costs, taxes and move in costs, we anticipate $250,000.00 will prudently take us into the first two years of residence there, with plans in place for ongoing fundraising and a continuing capital campaign through December 2011 take us to the one million mark to ensure our fiscal stability well into the 21st century.
We are looking for Corporate Partners, Family, Friends and any and all gifts no matter how large or small.

2008 Build a website and launch initiative to gather stories about mothers, by mothers and about mothering by their children, friends and family as the founding online exhibit at Museum Of Motherhood. Amy Simon begins writing ‘Fun, Fabulous, Female, Facts’ as a monthly series at M.O.M. online. Several small grants were awarded MFI throughout the year. Board of Directors solidifies to include current active members. Begin filming in Toronto at ARM conference, ‘The Motherhood Movement, You Say You Want A Revolution’ as the Museum’s first acquisition and fundraising tool. Met at length with Pro Bono Legal in White Plains, NY and accountants to make sure we were following all proper guidelines.
2009 Lynn Barbuto initiates a window gallery display during the summer months in the village of Seneca Falls, called ‘The Moms Of Rock and Roll’. This is a big hit with the tourists and creates much good will with the village. First screening of ‘The Motherhood Movement’ film, Toronto, fall 2009 and article featuring Dr. Andrea O’Reillly and Joy Rose in Herizons Magazine, speaking about the museum. In October we hired Claire Misquitta to help format a broad-based business plan, and oversee a grant writing campaign. In December a library series launched a series of mom-made art and music classes throughout New Jersey as part of Mamapalooza Events, to raise awareness of MFI and M.O.M. Additional meetings in Seneca Falls yielded good results with the village promising to assist in the process of empowering the museum locally. 60 Cayuga Property was visited and assessed to be a great prospect for founding MFI offices and the Museum Of Motherhood. Inspection of property is currently scheduled, as are ongoing meetings with the property owner, the village and the MFI board. Application for DUNs number successful and MFI was registered with Network For Good to facilitate Capital Campaign.
Ongoing visions include M.O.M. as a real and virtual social change museum focused on amplifying the voices and experiences of mothers while connecting 'the cultural family'. Women, families and communities participate in exhibits, herstory, art, dialog, literature, film, storytelling, theater, dance, music, and empowerment through educational experiences. M.O.M. will preserve, collect, and interpret a herstoy of achievement and advances by women who are mothers and related materials and information to promote the understanding and appreciation of the cultural diversity and general collective impact of mothers in the home and the world in perpetuity.
